Fermín Muguruza’s participation in Nāfidfia – Focus on the Maghreb brings to the programme a sound, documentary, and political dimension deeply rooted in the experiences of migration, memory, and cultural resistance that traverse the Maghreb and North Africa. Throughout his career, Muguruza has woven a network of musical and human complicities that transcend borders, connecting the Basque Country with multiple geographies of the Global South and positioning music as a space for encounter, denunciation, and identity affirmation.
In the context of this programme, his collaboration is part of a line of work that understands contemporary creation as a tool to question official narratives and open cracks in hegemonic discourses. Muguruza shares with Nāfidfia – Focus on the Maghreb the desire to activate other memories —oral, collective, insurgent— that are often relegated to the margins of institutional history.
His artistic practice, marked by cultural hybridisation and dialogue between languages, rhythms, and political contexts, embodies that “window” that gives the programme its title: a device to look at and listen to ourselves from complexity, recognising the tensions between belonging and displacement, between cultural identity and hybridity. In this space for meeting, viewing, and debate, his contribution reinforces the idea of creative resistance as a way of rewriting imaginaries and imagining shared futures.
