As the second activity within the Nafidha – Focus on the Maghreb program curated by Fermin Muguruza, the Tunisian artist Badiaa Bouhrizi —who will also take part the previous day in the discussion following the screening of Next Music Station: Tunisia— will give a concert that extends the documentary’s resonances into a live setting.
Through a gradually unfolding theatrical and sonic trance, a musical narrative is constructed, sustained by Bouhrizi’s powerful voice, in which the traditional hymns of the mountains of north-western Tunisia reverberate. She is accompanied by Chaam (Robin Palluaud) on cosmic guitar, ambient keyboards and electronics, and Paco (Malek Ben Halim) on percussion, Foley and bass.
Far from presenting itself as a fusion of genres, the project is clearly rooted in electroacoustic composition, moving from a sonic minimalism inspired by Amazigh music to the sophisticated textures of the contemporary club scene. True to her artistic trajectory, Badiaa presents original compositions and politically engaged texts: poems in classical Arabic by modern women authors —or her own— alongside pieces in Tunisian dialect, which address the feminisation of gazes and metaphors, the displacements of a Palestinian woman between London and Nablus and the taut rope that ties love to revolution.
